Initially founded as the European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA), Bard College Berlin was formed in 2011 with a collaboration between Bard College in the US and ECLA. Bard College Berlin is an accredited German university in both the US and Germany, and offers two unique four-year degree programmes: a BA in Humanities, the Arts, and Social Thought, or a BA in Economics, Politics, and Social Thought. Both pathways offer core courses throughout the degree, as well as options for electives and languages courses. Students may also opt to undertake a one-semester or one-year programme suitable to their needs, such as spending their Junior year at Bard College Berlin. The College boasts a 1:5 student to faculty ratio, and an average class size of ten students. Focus is on seminar-style classes that are discussion-based: with a curriculum that is highly interdisciplinary rather than the traditional focus on “career-based” tracks. Faculty come from all over the world, and there is a large emphasis on bringing in specialist faculty as visiting professors. These visiting faculty come from a wide range of universities and liberal arts colleges, including Oxford, Columbia, Cambridge, Swarthmore and Chicago. Bard College Berlin models many of their programmes of the original Bard College model from the US. The university itself is small, with approximately one hundred students matriculated at any one time, and currently has students from 40 different countries. Student life is based in a residential college.
