Other Countries

The liberal arts model is expanding to other countries beyond Europe, North America and Asia. Several new programs are starting in the Middle East, which has a vibrant and rapidly growing scene in higher education, centered in the regions of UAE, Saudia Arabia, and Qatar. Some notable programs in the Middle East include the NYU Abu Dhabi campus, the UAE American University of Sharjah. One well-established liberal arts colleges in Africa is the Ashesi University in Ghana, founded by a Swarthmore College alumnus. Within South America, there is the brand new Yachay Tech in Ecuador, which is a fascinating startup designed for technical subjects, but bringing in some liberal arts subjects as well. Bangladesh and Pakistan are also included in this section to highlight their important programs – the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, and the new Habib University in Karachi, Pakistan.
